A Secret Desire (English)
Friday, September 9 - MATCHBOX4, 8pm Tagore’s deep understanding of a woman’s psyche in a fast-changing world is the central theme of this play. A Quiet Desire opens with a young Rabindranath Tagore (Robi), his brother Jyoti, and Jyoti’s wife Kadambari, enjoying a summer together in Chandanagar. The striking age gap between Kadambari and Jyoti, and her close relationship with Robi, is evident. Initially, Kadambari is Robi’s sole admirer, critic, and inspiration. As the play progresses, we see Robi’s increasing fame as a poet making him drift away from Kadambari. The growing distance with Robi and her own husband’s indifference drives Kadambari into severe depression and suicide. Poetic narration and Tagore’s songs add to the beauty of this powerful production.

Adhe Adhure (Hindi)
Sunday, September 11 - MATCHBOX4, 6pm This play is regularly performed every year by major theater companies in India. In Adhe Adhure, playwright Mohan Rakesh captures the complex world of a contemporary Indian woman. The lead character, Savitri, is an overburdened woman caught between her career and the demands of her three children. And her husband, Mahendranath, is no help. She reaches out in vain to her boss, Singhania, to find a job for her son, and to her one-time lover Jog for emotional support. Juneja, her husband’s friend, confronts Savitri with reality of life. In the climax scene Savitri lashes out at Juneja as she looks for the ‘perfect’ man.
